The Client
The City of Costa Mesa recently selected Starfish Signs & Graphics to print, fabricate, and install 116 custom wayfinding signs for one of the largest bicycle trail systems in Orange County, CA.
The City of Costa Mesa received $7.9 million in grants from the Orange County Transportation Authority’s Complete Streets Program to develop three interconnected, separated bike lanes as part of an extensive expansion of its bicycle network.
A former client within the City of San Clemente staff recommended us for this project, highlighting our expertise in managing complex projects. Our reputation for delivering high-quality signage on time and within budget made us a natural fit for this initiative.
At Starfish Signs, managing intricate projects is one of our core strengths, and our team was fully prepared to meet the challenges of this important project.
Challenges & Solutions
Fabrication
The signs had precise requirements developed by a specialist design firm. Creating design proofs for 116 signs involved making sure every detail was accurate for each one.
We needed to guarantee top-tier production quality, considering factors like vandalism resistance and the ability to withstand strong winds. Our excellent collaborations with 3M and HP enabled us to achieve vibrant color fidelity and long-lasting durability, especially in Southern California’s sunny climate.
Permitting
Installing so many signs along the bicycle route posed a significant project management challenge. We had to coordinate with various property owners and managers. Some signs were placed on city streets, others along the Santa Ana River trail system, and some on property owned or managed by other entities, such as the Orange County Transportation Authority. This required obtaining multiple permits from different jurisdictions.
Installation
After securing the necessary permits and approvals, we faced the logistical challenges of placing the signs in their exact locations, while coordinating with existing signage. Although the signs had consistent designs, the installation methods varied based on location. Some were mounted on new posts, while others were affixed to existing posts or light poles. In addition, we had to ensure all signs met the standards for minimum height and vehicle clearance.
The Results
The sign installation began in early September, and the Starfish Team was pleased to participate in some initial video shoots by the City of Costa Mesa TV crew. As of September 2024, all 116 signs have been installed.
