From Vine to Sign: Branding Southern California’s Wine Bar Scene

California is undoubtedly the best and largest wine-producing state in the US, responsible for 84–90% of the country’s total wine production. Boasting over 4,300 wineries, including famous regions like Napa Valley and Sonoma, California produces world-class wines and would rank as the world’s fourth-largest wine producer if it were a country.

Starfish Signs & Graphics is fortunate to be located in Southern California, where we can enjoy world-class wineries and assist wine bar owners with their branding and signage. Within a few miles of our company location, we have three excellent wine bar customers.

We have worked with The Cellar in San Clemente for many years. Their tagline says it all: “Wine. Music. Great Food + A Coffee Bar.” The Cellar stands out for its energetic, social atmosphere where live music and entertainment make it as much a nightlife spot as it is a wine destination. Its blend of café-style offerings during the day and live music at night makes it an appealing destination day or night.

Also nearby is Wine Experience Dana Point. In addition to a great selection of wines by the glass, we particularly like their cheese bar and innovative menu. What makes Wine Experience unique is its more curated, educational approach to wine—focusing on guided tastings, thoughtful pairings, and a boutique-style selection that encourages guests to explore and learn rather than simply order a drink. The experience feels intentionally refined, with an emphasis on discovery and appreciation.

And just down the road from us, in the Talega area of San Clemente, The Barnoa Wine Company has been described as a “hidden gem.” Starfish Signs has had a 10+ year partnership with Barnoa, involving building signage, interior menu signage, banners and other specialty items. Barnoa sets itself apart through its deeply curated wine program and strong community roots, offering a neighborhood wine bar experience that feels both elevated and approachable. Kim Norris, the owner of Barnoa, brings a wealth of wine knowledge to the business, reflected in carefully selected bottles, rotating featured wines, and thoughtfully designed wine dinners, classes, and tasting events that foster a loyal local following. Unlike larger or more entertainment-driven venues, Barnoa emphasizes intimacy and expertise—creating a space where guests can consistently discover something new while feeling like part of a close-knit wine community.

Though all three businesses share a common focus in quality wine paired with food, the feeling of each is distinctly different and their brands reflect their unique experiences. Our work gives us the opportunity to translate each brand into signage that captures the atmosphere of each space.

“Being a local business owner, I really like supporting other local businesses. Starfish Signs’ owners Mike and Laura Reilly have always supported my business with great designs, great quality, and fast service. Their knowledge of the industry is so “on point” for what is needed for good signage. Starfish Signs has always been truly professional and easy to work with.”
